A trip update in numbers – and some pictures too

Back home at last! The trip was a little too long, both in miles traveled and number of weeks.  Everywhere we went, we wanted to stay at for too long (except the RV parking lots).

I don’t really have any exciting stories to tell or amazing pictures to post. Most of the pictures are just variations of this:

Above – a very nice man (sadly for me – not for him, happily married) who took my son fishing while I hiked with his wife and our dogs outside of Silverton, CO.

And this:

Here’s some trip numbers:

~ $3,500 – total trip spending (plus health insurance of $290)

47 days – total time gone

47 days – total days since my back lawn has been mowed (ugh)

~40 – number of firepit fires

$0 – spent on firewood

1 – # of fish I caught

1 – # of fish that got away from me

5 – # of fish the kid caught

$2 – amount he charges me per fish

Squillion – # of times the cat has meowed at me today

150+ – # of walks the dog was taken on

Trillion – # of times I threw the ball for the dog

100+ – pages written

Million – # of times I was interrupted while writing

$1,000 – approximate amount of damage done to the back of the RV going down some hellish road in the middle of nowhere

Billion – # of times the voices in my head said “OMG OMG OMG should we turn around? Holy cr*p there’s nowhere to turn around!”

2 – # of hours it took to go 7 miles down the death road

1 – # of hours it took to get back out

3 – total # of hours spent on the internet

3 – books I couldn’t mail because I showed up twice to the post office – on Sunday (doh!) and had no addresses written down because they were on a computer that was dead. They’re being mailed today – once the lawn is mowed. Maybe tomorrow…

4 – meals that a single Cracker Barrel meal can feed 2 people and some for the dog

8 – # of pounds I lost on the trip

30% – potato chip bag inflation index from Canada to the US (220g vs 297g) for a $2.50 at par bag cost

25%+ – size inflation of fast food portions from Canada to the US

-25% – cost inflation of fast food portions from US to Canada

0 – # of pictures of me taken on the trip

Loads – amount I missed reading everyone’s adventures

Holy cow, sounds like an adventure to me!!!! what road (so I know never to venture that way!) did you damage your RV on???

Somewhere south of Silverton, maybe about half an hour on the 550. If you are boondocking, do it in Idaho…

Interesting that you could lose 8 pounds on a trip where the potato chip and fast food portions are 25% higher. I want to go on that trip!

Well, except the part about only 3 hours on the internet. I think I might have trouble with that.

Hi Sydney! Well, we only ate fast food out maybe 3 times and we buy a single meal for both of us and split it since the portions are so big, and the dog usually gets part of it too. That would be almost it for the day for eating.

And there was a LOT of hiking, biking, swimming and walking (average more than 4 hours a day) – and we don`t feel like eating when it`s too hot out which helped too.

I don`t think I`ve had a vacation where I haven`t lost weight. Now the trick is to keep it off and keep going now that I`m home…

Your kid charged $2 per fishy? Excellent!!! I smell a budding entrepreneur :)

Hi Kelsi! Yes, maybe a squillionaire! Well, I figure it’s no different than Stephen King getting paid $.25 per short story he wrote when he was a kid… He would do it (the fishing) anyway since he has infinite patience for that stuff wherever we go. And he doesn’t get an allowance, so I pay him market rates pretty much for whatever he does that’s above and beyond. Plus he’s just a very helpful kid generally – considering he’s an extortionist… :-P

So glad you are back. I loved those pictures. The one on the lake is almost too perfect! It is a representation of how I envision perfect peace.

I got nervous reading about your drive down death road, I cannot imagine how it felt to actually drive it in an RV.

Welcome home, and maybe your son will only charge you 2 dollars to mow the back lawn!

Thanks Kris! I took everything with just my camera phone since we lost the regular camera somewhere early on.

I think my “problem” with the drive wasn’t the road itself, since I’ve driven down far worse out on farms, what hurt was the length on this one switchback, that’s where I did the damage.

Ha on the lawn! He gets nothing from me for that one. He was very nervous telling me about that. Actually, he took his little brother for a trip to visit my sister, so he escaped… this time… :-)

You came back!! YAY! I bet you hugged your bed for a very long time. I am always so happy to see my bed when I’ve been away too long. Can’t wait to hear from you some more! The pictures are gorgeous. I thought the first one was a stock one!

Hey MSM! Oddly enough, I slept better in the RV. It could have had something to do with the cat sitting there purring on my face all night though.

Been there, done that. Family RV broke down on Denali Highway in Alaska. There are two ( I believe) lodges on the road. We luckily broke down within 3 miles of one. Lodge owner fixed RV – people in Alaska can fix about anything! I’m amazed at how friendly and helpful people on the road are.
Most days go by fast and are unmemorable = you and your son will remember your trip for a long time!

Thanks DIY – I find the same thing with the friendliness and helpfulness of fellow campers. I swear I talked more with some fellow campers than I have with the neighbours who I’ve been living beside for the last 6 years!
